Game Content & Limits

Coven 1934 is an immersive horror experience. It features supernatural monsters, and desperate and loathsome mortals. You need to know what you are getting into, but it is not without limitations.

These lists may be updated as the writing of the game is refined.

Content Warnings

The following types of content will be present in the game, and difficult to avoid –

Content may include for all characters: blood, gore, supernatural monsters, physical violence, firearms, magic and occultism, witchcraft, poverty and economic tensions, religious iconography and behavior, verbal aggression, criminal behavior, starvation and economic desperation, cults, fanaticism, malevolent supernatural forces

The following types of content will be present in the game for some characters, but not all, and can be avoided in the game.

Content may include for some characters: violence toward children, racial tension and bigotry, indigenous issues, interactions with law enforcement, abusive relationships, alcoholism and substance addiction, bullying and shaming, paranoia, homelessness, identity crises and manipulated memories, pregnancy, mental breakdowns, mind control and loss of free will, possession by occult forces, subjective and changing realities

Content Limits

There are some elements we have decided not to include in our game. We do not feel they add anything to this particular event, represent an unnecessary barrier to the comfort of those who would otherwise like to participate, and/or would require more dedicated monitoring than we can safely provide.

The writing team will not include these elements, and players are forbidden from introducing them on their own.

Banned elements: Sexual assault and violence, overt real-world bigotry and intolerance (use of racial slurs, sexual slurs, homophobia, transphobia, etc.)

Bigotry and Racial Content

The 1930s was a time of bigotry against BIPOC individuals. There was oppression and hate aimed regularly at Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native communities.

We’re looking to balance not erasing the struggles of minority communities during the Great Depression, with the comfort and inclusion of all players. As such, this kind of content is going to be opt-in and will not be overt. There will not be slurs in the game. We will not be featuring the Klan or similar groups. The KKK had mostly collapsed in Texas by the time of the game, but we would not be including them even if this wasn’t true.

We are working with BIPOC members of the LARP community, and they are present on our writing staff. We will be following their lead on how to handle these issues.

Personal Contact and Romantic/Sexual Content

The romantic content you wish to engage in is firmly under your control as a participant. Rules for consent to physical contact, opting out, blocking and prior negotiation apply to sexual content. If you wish to have a sexual interest in another player’s character, you must do so with their explicit negotiated consent – even if the interest is only one way.

If someone declines, do not bring it up again. And the consent to sexual interest can be, like all consent, removed at any time for any reason. Remember – “No” means “no”, “maybe” means “no”, and “yes” said without anything less than enthusiasm and clarity is also “no.”

This is an adult game, but nudity is not allowed.

Personal and especially romantic contact is only allowed at game with explicit negotiation. Do not engage in sex or similar activities that might be considered sex.

Any issues regarding this during game, as well as any other violations of consent, can brought to any staff member.

No Dangerous Acts

Players are forbidden from doing physically unsafe acts, with or without consent, that are likely to injure themselves or others. Doing so will result in an immediate expulsion from the event.

No Drugs or Alcohol

Having or being under the influence of real world drugs and alcohol at game is forbidden.
